About

In 1940, Elder E.L. Gordon was baptized in Jesus’ name by Elder Walter Scott at Christ Temple Pentecostal Church. As the Lord blessed him, Elder Gordon began to feel the call to pastor. So, in 1945, with the blessing of his Pastor, Elder Walter Scott, he left his position as Assistant Pastor of Christ Temple Pentecostal Church and began a work.

On November 11, 1945, Elder Scott opened the doors of Good News Temple in the home of Elder Gordon at 1142 Armstrong in Kansas City, Kansas.  Property was purchased at the corner of Benton Plaza and Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, but because of circumstances, was later sold.  Services continued in Elder Gordon’s home until October 1942, when the church relocated to 2021 East 9th street in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1957, the church moved to 919 Lydia, where a house was converted into a place of worship. In 1965, the owner of the property sold the building and services were held in the home of Brother and Sister Finney at 3223 Woodland. In May of 1965, Good News Temple purchased the building at 3309 Woodland.

In early 1986, District Elder E.L. Gordon became ill and due to illness retired as pastor. Dr. Lorene T. Gordon, the wife of the former pastor who had been serving as the Assistant Pastor of Good News Temple, was installed as Pastor of the Good News Temple in April of that same year.  Sadly, District Elder Gordon was called home to be with the Lord as of July 26, 1986. Dr. Gordon continued to serve as overseer with Elder Morris A. Brown Sr. serving as Assistant Pastor until she was called to cease from labor on November 6, 1987. At this time, a reluctant but obedient Elder Brown assumed the Leadership on Good News Temple Church.

In July of 1988 Good News Temple purchased the property at 2301 Van Brunt. The Lord continued to bless and in 1998 the church relocated and entered into an agreement to lease the property at 1911 Hardesty, with the option to buy.  During this time, at the advice of lawyers and clergymen, the name of the church was changed to Apostolic Church of God. In March of 2000 the property at 1911 Hardesty was purchased. The Lord continued to bless and in 2001 the property located at 1913, 1915, and 1917 Hardesty was purchased. Under the leadership of Elder Brown and his lovely wife First Lady Patricia A. Brown, the church has continued to grow and many ministries have been birthed and the Lord is to be praised.

The Apostolic Church of God is committed to becoming a spiritual and educational epicenter for families throughout the Kansas City area by being a community resource designed to enhance the life of men and women, while positively influencing the community.
